About Nancy

From my earliest memories to adulthood I have always been interested in art, as well as the nature of relationships and communities. Friends, family and community have always been important. I began to satisfy my need to be creative and at the same time learn to understand the broader sense of community with undergraduate study in art and anthropology and graduate school with further study in education and photography.

Today, my love of learning about individuals and community is expressed in my career as a photographer. Whether photographing for a magazine, public relations event, wedding or personal documentary, I enjoy photographing the beauty that is the result of the connection. It is important to photograph as much of the story as possible to reveal the essence of the event and the result includes the subtleties as well as the major happenings of the day.

Although I am a Washington, DC based photographer, I work outside of the area as well as at local venues. I photograph editorial and travel assignments both within and outside of the US. Foreign projects include Teenagers in Japan and Summer in Iceland. Within the US, projects include Organic Farm, Migrant Farm Worker and Chinatown. Clients include National Geographic Traveler, Corporation for National Service.

I have photographed numerous weddings, portraits, public relations events, gatherings, bar and bat-mitzvahs within the greater Washington, DC area. The process includes conversation and meeting before to learn the particular needs. The end result is a combination of my creativity and the client's needs.

I have great enthusiasm for teaching photography workshops and classes in the Washington, DC area and on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Recent classes are: Working with Portraiture in the Natural Environment and Photographing People and Place.

My personal photography projects are documentary in style. Projects have been exhibited nationally and internationally to include Harvard Univeristy's Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, MA, and Galerie St. Benezet, Avignon, France. Recent collections include the Library of Congress.

On a personal note, I sing in an a cappella group, play the flute, and love much that takes place in the outdoors. When I'm not photographing I am often hiking, biking and occasionally kayaking!!
